Why Horses?
Horses are wise mentors in this unique type of work. As prey animals, their “flight” instincts become instant mirrors and non-judgmental feedback mechanisms for humans. Horses sense and respond to a person’s intentions, emotions, and thoughts that are conveyed subconsciously through body language. Through the experience of observing a horse’s response to their requests and directions, each person learns how to communicate more effectively, face their fears and manage their emotions, and become more consistent and congruent in their actions.
Through observation of herd dynamics and one-on-one interaction with individual horses, attendees also learn new leadership skills. A tremendous confidence boost comes from learning how to connect with and direct a one-thousand-pound animal while standing on the ground. EFLC sessions are highly interactive and provide an ‘in the moment’ learning experience, teaching skills which can be difficult to acquire in more traditional workshop or training settings.

Equine Faciliated Learning and Coaching (EFLC) programs provide a dynamic process of building leadership, emotional intelligence and self-awareness skills through horse-human interactions. The ability of managers and leaders to effectively embody these skills impacts an organization’s bottom line, since successful teambuilding, interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution efforts are crucial in today’s marketplace. While interacting with horses, individuals become able to identify and shift limiting behavior patterns that prohibit them from reaching their full potential in business settings. No prior horse experience is necessary, and safety precautions are thoroughly reviewed.
While participating in a leadership with horses program individuals, leaders and teams experience the opportunity to:
-
Develop skills to work through uncomfortable, emotionally charged situations.
-
Move from conflict into resolution and agreement more quickly.
-
Face fears and learn new behaviors to gain personal power, grace and strength.
-
Experience breakthroughs that increase the depth of Emotional Intelligence.
-
Expand presence, power, confidence and self-esteem.

The next Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching Apprenticeship begins in March of 2007. Applications are now being taken.
This program is for coaches, therapists, counselors, horse enthusiasts and individuals who wish to become facilitators of Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching. The primary philosophy of this program will be fully integrating one’s own personal and professional growth experience through the wisdom of the horse while facilitating others in this powerful form of work.
The EFLC Training program is highly experiential and requires fieldwork, additional reading, writing and group process. Apprentices learn processes for individual sessions (Mind Body Method) and key components and activities for two and three day workshops. The apprenticeship focuses on integrating all levels of a person’s experience (mind, body, emotions, intuition, focus and intention) when working with horses.
The Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching Apprenceship program is offered in a nine month time span. It is includes three, 1-week onsite training programs, on-going tele based classes, individual fieldwork and study, and individual sessions. EFLC Apprenceship Program

When I was 28 years old I experienced a traumatic accident with a horse. During my last riding lesson I was moving into a canter for the first time. My horse bucked and I was flung to the ground with my foot stuck in the stirrup. I then was dragged across the rocky arena. Although luckily there were no broken bones, both my physical and emotional body were bruised deeply. I hung my helmet and left the barn vowing never to return again. From that point on in my life I carried a deep-seated sense of anxiety and fear about horses and life. I did not realize I was carrying this deeply ingrained fear until I began to work with horses again, nearly twelve years later.
Through several serendipitous experiences, I began to learn about how horses think, how they handle their energy and how they communicate with each other. Through this process I began to understand and approach the horse from a different perspective. It gave me the confidence to work with them again. This, however, did not release the deeply ingrained fear I held. This fear affected all parts of my life, from my relationships to my decision-making processes, and most importantly my ability to move forward in my life and work.
 |
I began to use this new knowledge and my emotional responses with horses as an important part of my process and development. I learned how to track and acknowledge my energy and emotions. I practiced being fully congruent and authentic, emotionally and mentally, in the presence of a horse. Slowly my fears began to subside as I recognized and experienced them on a cellular level. My confidence returned as I learn new ways that respected these magnificent creatures. I began to work with these processes and a body of work emerged called the Mind Body Method Coach Training (this process is taught in the EFLC facilitator training program).

Experiencing the potential of horses as teachers came to me in my first round pen experience with a “natural” horseman. The realization of how I was trying to, and failed to, communicate and connect with the horse was instant and profound. This one experience changed how I communicated with horses, and how I communicated with all beings that I viewed as more powerful than myself. In one moment I learned how to be fully powerful, without overpowering another or becoming powerless myself. I quickly saw the implications of this work to benefit my life coaching clients.
Healing experiences with horses are plentiful, and I have continued to bond deeply with the horses in my life. I feel blessed to have had 10 years of healing experience in my background and to see how these philosophies transfer to the horse. Clients have also been blessed with such experiences. It is not uncommon for tears of joy, sadness, or inner power to flow. It is not uncommon for people to call me a few days later and say “thank you….this experience changed my life.” To be fully present and communicate with a 1000 pound, powerful, sensitive animal is truly indescribable.
My own experiences with horses have changed my life. I have experienced a deeper connection with my own body, and developed an ability to ground my power and speak my truth. I have developed the skill to be fully authentic with my feelings in relationship with others. I now honor my gut feelings and intuition about situations, agreements, and partnerships I am considering. In addition, I experienced a tremendous increase in my creative expression. For the first time in my life, I began to paint large abstracts, a process I had longed to do for many years. I have moved from living in my head to living and moving forward from the heart. I have returned to a more authentic me, a ‘me’ without an underlying current of anxiety or fear.
My path also took me to Tucson, Arizona to study in a year long apprenticeship program with Linda Kohanov, the author of The Tao of Equus and Riding Between the Worlds and her business partner Kathleen Barry Ingram, MA at Epona Equestrian Services. I honor Linda for being one of the first individual’s to step forth and bravely write about her experiences with horses.
In all of my years of working with people I have felt blessed and honored to witness their growth, and the willingness that they have to live life fully and to know them selves deeply. I am humbled to be offering this work in the world, and humbled to work with the horses. Their beauty, strength, honesty, curiosity and grace amazes me every day.
My life is dedicated to helping people evolve and heal, and to reach their fullest potential, as well as to help all horses be recognized and respected as healers and teachers. I invite you to join me for an extraordinary experience and connection with yourself, others and the horses.
Warmly,
Kathy Pike
